HMI Metallogen Short Arc Metal Halide

Osram's Metallogen HMI metal halide lamps are particularly efficient light sources for film and TV studios, providing as much as four times more light than the filament lamps they replace, along with a high colour temperature light closely matching daylight.

The low wattage lamps such as this 200W version are ideally suited to battery powered luminaires, making them very popular for live television news recording. This lamp was intended as a successor to the earlier 200W single ended CID lamp developed by Thorn Lighting. Osram however had no experience with single ended arc tubes at the time, and instead opted for a very small double ended arc tube sealed within an outer jacket. This resulted in a slight increase in light centre length from 36.5 to 39mm, but this was felt to be acceptable in view of the increased performance that was attainable from an axial arc in the compact reflectors that accompany this type of lamp.
