Iwasaki 'FEC Multi Super Ace' 5 Band Metal Halide

The new generation of Eye Multi-Super-Ace lamps was introduced in 2002 to replace the traditional Multi-Hi-Ace in applications where superior colour rendering properties are desirable. At the same time flicker of the light has been substantially reduced when operated on standard gear.
The principal technological change lies in the arc tube, which contains a revolutionary new cocktail of metal halide salts. Traditional metal halide lamps used in the USA and Japan (such as the Multi-Hi-Ace) are based on sodium-scandium halides which are excellent for delivering a very high initial luminous flux. However this diminishes rapidly during life, colour rendering is only moderate (CRI of 65) and flicker can be a problem when operated on many ballasts.
The traditional European alternative has been the tri-band metal halide lamp, employing three different halides substantially radiating in the blue, green and reddish-orange parts of the spectrum. With this technology colour rendering is increased and lumen depreciation is considerably reduced, but the initial value is much lower and lifetimes are shorter.
The new Iwasaki 5-band technology in this lamp is still based on sodium-scandium system for high efficacy and long life, but augmented with three new metal halides to fill in the gaps in the spectrum and thereby raise the CRI to an impressive 75. The lamp incorporates the company's FEC internal ignitor and will therefore operate directly from standard mercury or metal halide ballasts with no other auxiliary circuitry required. Note that the marking on this lamp reads Multi-Hi-Ace, this is purely because it is an early sample, created before the new brand had been introduced.
