Sylvania Relumina Ceramic MH Retrofit for Mercury

The high pressure mercury lamp has been widely used for exterior and street lighting since the 1930s, however by modern standards its performance is very poor. Not only is its luminous efficacy the lowest of all the discharge lamps at just 40-50lm/W, its colour rendering properties are poor, and even though its lifetime until failure may be quite long, the rate of lumen depreciation is extremely fast. Most mercury installations have therefore been upgraded to better performing HID lamps, but large quantities still remain in service due to the cost associated with installing new luminaires for the more efficient lamps.

In order to avoid further wastage of energy in old installations, a regulation was passed in Europe which resulted in the banning of mercury lamps in April 2015. High pressure sodium retrofits for mercury were also phased out, because they too are not especially efficient. Since not all customers may be able to afford to change their lighting equipment to accept newer lamp types, Sylvania launched this remarkable "Relumina" lamp in January 2015.

Based on ceramic metal halide technology, it offers a major improvement in performance. The outer dimensions are no larger than the mercury lamp it replaces, making it a perfect retrofit in all existing luminaires. Thanks to a built-in inductance and glowbottle starter within in the lamp base, it is able to work on existing mercury control gear without modification. The inductor reduces power by over 30%, realising large energy savings and a rapid payback to recover the higher cost of this lamp. Further advantages are a dramatic improvement in lumen maintenance, and an increase in colour rendering index from 50 to 85.
